A first look at your child's bite, around age seven

Dr. Pilar Aceves watches how your child's teeth and jaws are growing. Some children only need to be watched. Some start early. She tells you which, and why, and you decide.

Care by age

Where your child is, and what comes next

One orthodontist, from the first check to the adults in the family. Each stage has its own page and its own fee in writing.

  • Around age 7

    A first check

A short visit to see how the teeth are coming in and how the jaws meet. Often the answer is to look again in a year.

  • Ages 8 to 12

    A growing-jaw stage

A first stage of treatment, for a bite Dr. Aceves wants to guide while the jaws are still growing. Some children never need one.

    About the growing-jaw stage
  • Teen years

    Teen braces and aligners

Braces or clear aligners once the permanent teeth are in. We say which fits a teenager's days, and what each asks of them.

The first check

What an early check is

Looking, counting and talking. Nothing more.

Dr. Pilar Aceves looks at how the teeth are coming in, how the upper and lower jaws meet and what your child's habits show. Sometimes the answer is to wait and look again in a year. Sometimes it is a plan. You hear which, and why. Early treatment is not always needed, and starting early doesn't promise less time later.

At the check

  • About 30 minutes

  • No treatment starts that day

A first visit

Your child's first visit, in four steps

We show your child each tool before it is used, and you can stay beside the chair the whole time.

  1. 01

Step 1: You ask for a time

Use the form or call. Pedro finds a time around school and answers questions about fees.

  2. 02

Step 2: You and your child sit down

Dr. Aceves says hello to your child first, then talks with you both about what you've noticed.

  3. 03

Step 3: She looks and counts

A mirror, a light, and sometimes photographs or a scan of the teeth. Your child holds the mirror if they'd like.

  4. 04

Step 4: You hear what she saw

What she would do, what she would watch, and what it costs, in writing if you want it.

For parents

What parents ask us first

  • Can you stay with my child?

Yes. Stay as long as you like, in the chair-side seat or in the lobby. Your child decides how they want it.

  • Can we come after school?

We keep after-school times for children, and we can write a note for the school if you need one.

  • What will it cost?

A written estimate before treatment, and no figure from us before then. Kerri reads your plan first.

Questions

Before you ask for a first check

Is seven too early?

For a look, no. A first check is Dr. Aceves seeing how your child is growing. Many children are told to come back later, and she says what she will watch for.

Does a first check mean braces?

No. Nothing starts at a first check. You hear what she sees and what her options are, including waiting.

Do I need a note from our dentist?

No. Your family dentist can refer you, or you can call us yourself. Your child keeps seeing the family dentist either way.

What if a wire pokes or a bracket comes loose?

Call us. We can usually tell you what to do at home until your visit. For a hard blow to the face, or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911.

Will I know what it costs first?

Yes. You get a written estimate before any treatment, and we tell you what your plan says about orthodontics.
