A growing-jaw stage

A growing-jaw stage is a first, shorter stage of treatment for a child whose jaws and teeth Dr. Aceves wants to guide while the child is still growing. It is for some children, around ages eight to twelve. Many children never need one.

Models and a desktop scanner

The plan starts from photographs and a scan of the teeth, then a model Dr. Aceves can hold up and turn.

What happens

Check-ins come about every six to ten weeks, and the stage is paused when it is done.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Records

Photographs and a scan of the teeth, so the plan is made from what's there.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The plan

Dr. Aceves shows you what she suggests, what else you could do, and what happens if you wait.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The appliance

A removable or fixed appliance is fitted. Sonya shows your child how it feels and how to clean it.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Check-ins

A quick visit about every six to ten weeks. When the stage is done, we pause and look again as more teeth arrive.

A second stage, with braces or aligners, may follow in the teen years. Some children don't need one.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

Teeth can feel sore for a few days after an appliance is fitted or turned. We tell you what helps, and your child can ask us to stop at any point.

  • If you wait

Waiting is an option, and she'll tell you what she'd watch. Some bites change with growth, and some don't.

  • Risks and after-care

An appliance needs careful cleaning, and some foods have to wait. Teeth and gums can get sore or stained if it isn't cleaned. Call us if something breaks or rubs.

  • How it's billed

A stage has one fee, in writing before it starts, and a payment schedule you agree to. We read your plan's orthodontic benefits first.

Questions about a growing-jaw stage

Does an early stage mean braces later?

Not always. Some children need a second stage and some don't. Dr. Aceves tells you what she expects and why, and says when she isn't sure.

Will my child be able to eat normally?

Mostly, with a few foods to leave out. You get a plain list on the day the appliance is fitted.

What if my child won't wear it?

Tell us. We would rather change the plan than fight about it at the dinner table.
